largely due to the number of transactions being low.
Most of the property owners have retained their properties
in the hope of the real estate market getting better.
The commercial market in Calcutta witnessed some inquiries
coming in from multinationals. However, the transactions
still maintained a very thin volume. The rental market
for commercial properties has been more or less stable,
specifically in the case of small and medium sized properties.
Most of the property owners are hoping for demand to
come in from the domestic and international retail chains
to set an upward trend in the commercial market. However,
the supply still remains large and one needs to wait
and see if the market takes a favorable turn in the
year 2000. This increase in supply has been mainly due
to the downsizing of operations of many corporates and
secondly an increased activity in commercial construction
by corporates and private developers.
